The novel examined the socio-political conditions of the inhabitants of the sub-continent during British colonial rule. The Indian Independence Movement was expedited after the Swadeshi movement. The character of Bimala is the core element of the novel for portraying the conventional domestic settings and women’s role in the Indian Independence Movement.
