Abstract

The Khanqah system represents one of the most significant spiritual and educational institutions in the history of Islamic civilization. Emerging as centers of spiritual training, moral refinement, religious learning, and social welfare, Khanqahs have played a vital role in nurturing Islamic values and promoting ethical conduct among Muslim communities. Although the formal institution of the Khanqah developed over time, its fundamental principles are deeply rooted in the teachings of the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), particularly in the concepts of spiritual purification (Tazkiyah al-Nafs), remembrance of Allah (Dhikr), companionship of the righteous (Suhbah), sincerity (Ikhlas), and moral excellence (Ihsan).

This study aims to examine the Khanqah system in the light of the Qur'an and Sunnah, exploring its conceptual foundations, objectives, functions, and historical development. The research investigates the extent to which the practices and teachings commonly associated with Khanqahs correspond to the primary sources of Islam. It further analyzes the role of Khanqahs in character building, religious education, spiritual guidance, social cohesion, and community service. Special attention is given to Qur'anic injunctions and Prophetic traditions that emphasize spiritual discipline, self-reformation, and the cultivation of virtuous conduct.

Using an analytical and descriptive methodology, the study evaluates both the positive contributions and the contemporary challenges of the Khanqah system. It argues that when aligned with the authentic teachings of Islam, Khanqahs serve as effective institutions for spiritual development and social reform. The research concludes that the essential objectives of the Khanqah system are consistent with the broader Islamic vision of personal purification and collective moral well-being. Therefore, a balanced understanding of the Khanqah tradition, grounded in the Qur'an and Sunnah, is necessary for appreciating its historical significance and contemporary relevance in Muslim societies.
