The Role of Feminist Organizations in the Aurat March: A Study of Its Social Impact on Pakistani Society
Abstract
This study examines the role of women’s rights organizations in shaping, organizing, and sustaining the Aurat March as a prominent feminist movement in Pakistan. It focuses on the contributions of key organizations, including Women’s Action Forum, Aurat Foundation, Women Democratic Front, and Tehrik-e-Niswan. The study explores how these organizations have facilitated women’s participation in public discourse, advocated for gender equality, and mobilized support for issues related to women’s rights and social justice. Through awareness campaigns, advocacy initiatives, and grassroots activism, these organizations have contributed to transforming the Aurat March into a significant platform for highlighting concerns such as bodily autonomy, economic empowerment, protection from gender-based violence, and equal access to public spaces. The research further analyzes the social impact of the movement on Pakistani society, particularly its influence on youth engagement, media discourse, and public perceptions of gender roles. While the Aurat March has succeeded in generating national debate and increasing awareness of women’s rights, it has also encountered social criticism, political opposition, and institutional constraints. The study concludes that the involvement of women’s rights organizations has been instrumental in shaping contemporary feminist activism in Pakistan, while simultaneously revealing the ideological, cultural, and political tensions surrounding gender-related reforms in the country.
