A Research Study on the Importance and Role of Tafsir (Quranic Exegesis) in the Elucidation of Theological Discussions

Abstract

This study highlights the importance and significance of the science of Tafsir (Qur’anic exegesis) in explaining theological (kalam) discussions. Tafsir serves as the fundamental means of understanding the meanings, themes, and wisdom of the Holy Qur’an, while Ilm al-Kalam is the discipline that deals with the rational and logical interpretation of Islamic beliefs. The research emphasizes that for the correct understanding and defense of Islamic doctrines, Tafsir holds a central and indispensable position.In the light of the Qur’an, the importance of Tafsir lies in its role in clarifying the true message of divine revelation and guiding humanity toward the right path. The study also elaborates on the concept and importance of belief (‘aqidah), demonstrating that Tafsir acts as a guiding principle for understanding Ilm al-Kalam. It plays a key role in explaining essential doctrines such as the Necessary Being (Wajib al-Wujud, i.e., Allah), the belief in prophethood, the event of Mi‘raj (the Prophet’s ascension), and the doctrine of the finality of prophethood (Khatm al-Nubuwwah). All these beliefs are rooted in Qur’anic verses, and their correct understanding is not possible without proper exegesis.
