The Role of Tafsiri Literature in Addressing Jurisprudential Issues of the Digital Age

Abstract

This research article explores the resolution of contemporary jurisprudential issues arising in the digital age through the lens of exegetical literature of Tafsir. The rapid advancement of digital technologies including artificial intelligence cryptocurrency e-commerce platforms social media fatwas and virtual financial transactions has created novel ethical and legal dilemmas that traditional Islamic jurisprudence Fiqh must address. While classical Fiqh provides foundational principles the rapidly evolving digital landscape demands renewed interpretive efforts rooted in the Qur’anic worldview. This study investigates how Tafsir literature the interpretive tradition of the Holy Qur’an offers methodological tools such as maqasid al shariah higher objectives of Islamic law qiyas analogical reasoning istislah public interest and urf custom to respond effectively to digital era challenges. By analyzing key exegetical works from classical medieval and modern periods the article demonstrates that Tafsir is not merely a historical discipline but a dynamic hermeneutical framework capable of guiding jurists in issuing balanced relevant and ethically sound digital fatwas. The research highlights specific areas where exegetical insights have been applied including online transactions digital privacy cybercrime virtual worship and artificial intelligence ethics. Furthermore, it critiques the current fragmentation between exegetes and jurists arguing for an integrated approach that prioritizes Qur’anic values over superficial legal literalism. The findings suggest that revitalizing the interpretive spirit of Tafsir can bridge the gap between revelation and rapidly changing technological realities ensuring that Islamic law remains compassionate adaptive and principled. Ultimately this study calls for institutional collaboration between exegetes and digital jurists to develop a coherent Fiqh for the digital age without compromising religious authenticity.
